About the Poseys

Posey Yacht Design Background:

Our main business is computer sailing and racing simulations. We have also done sailboat performance calculations and design modifications.

We developed and marketed our first sailing simulation in 1983. We believe this was the first sailing simulator in existence for early DOS and Apple computers. Since then, we have kept up with technology and perfected our simulation skills. Our simulators are upgraded yearly as computer speed and technology improve. We've developed and marketed a total of ten different racing and sailing simulators.

Dennis Posey is the principal at Posey Yacht Design. His technical background, boat design experience, successful racing, teaching sailing, and miles of cruising give him a unique perspective on realistic simulation of sailing and racing, boat behavior, tactics, successful sailing strategies, wind and current in the real world.

Technical Background - Dennis Posey:

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) - BS in Aeronautical Engineering.

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) - Masters in Mechanical Engineering.

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) - Masters in Computer Science.

Dennis worked at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft for 28 years. He was responsible for the development of engineering and marketing simulations, among other things.

Sailing Background - Dennis Posey:

Taught sailing in New York at Port Washington Yacht Club, Knickerbocker Yacht Club, Cold Spring Harbor Yacht Club, and at the MIT Nautical Association, which constituted a physical education credit for his students.

Two-time Thistle Atlantic Coast Champion.

One of two skippers on the MIT intercollegiate team that won the Intercollegiate National Championship.

Elected to Intercollegiate Hall of Fame.

Firefly dinghy National Champion.

505 National Champion.

1960's - Racing, designing, and building catamarans. Won A Class Catamaran Nationals. Won Tornado (Olympic catamaran class) Atlantic Coast, National, and North American Championships. Third in 1970 Tornado World Championship.

1970's - Racing various offshore monohulls. In 1978, I designed "Firebrand" as a dual purpose One Ton racer and cruising boat. A dual purpose boat cannot compete at highest levels; but, we did well in local IOR and handicap races (PHRF): Numerous season firsts in class in Eastern Connecticut Sailing Assoc. Three class wins in Block Island Race and two class wins in Vineyard Race (distance races). Several seconds overall in class at Block Island Race Week. 1991 - Won Offshore Nationals Quarter Finals.

Throughout 70's, 80's and 90's raced in Frostbite dinghy series at Essex, Connecticut. Charlotte and I won the season's class championship about 20 times. We recently purchased a JY15 and are enjoying fine high-level competition locally and nationally.

Cruising - Charlotte and I have logged more than 60,000 miles cruising and racing "Firebrand". The two of us brought our boat back from a dismasting in a Gulf Stream storm - a rough and tumble 5 days! We've spent a lot of time cruising the Bahamas, Chesapeake Bay, Intercoastal Waterway, and Maine. We've made numerous trips to the Canadian Maritime Provinces and three trips to Newfoundland. We truly enjoy the challenge and self-sufficiency required cruising new places, especially to remote areas.

Background - Charlotte Posey:

I have sailed since 6 months old. Raced for 20 years, including 6 years of foredeck on "Firebrand". I now navigate. When cruising, I get my foredeck back!

I've been a technical writer for 20 years and worked in the simulation business since 1983.
